Abstract

The aim of the review is to explain the physiological effects of resistance exercises that impact on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women, based on the most relevant literature. The findings lead us to summarize the following: In postmenopausal women, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death. This population is vulnerable to the development of cardiovascular diseases because it does not have anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory endogenous hormonal protection. Cardiovascular risks in postmenopausal women are directly associated with metabolic disturbances, low levels of physical activity and overweight. Resistance exercises in postmenopausal women may be a strategy that mitigates the risk associated with dyslipidemia. In conclusion, resistance exercises are said to reduce cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women due to their lipid oxidation effect, derived from total energy expenditure. This includes the excessive post-exercise consumption of oxygen which decreases lipemic levels over a longer period of time than in aerobic exercises.
