Abstract

This research addresses the elderly in the context of the importance of self-reporting perceptions of quality of life and psychological indicators such as depression and cognitive impairment. Seniors (n = 30) were evaluated who had been performing physical exercise three times a week for one year. The aim of the research is to relate the variables of depression and cognitive impairment to the perception of quality of life. The Yesavage geriatric depression scale, Minimental and SF-36 quality of life tests were used. The results show that 16.6% (n = 5) present established depression and 26.7% (n = 8) mild depression, while 56.7% (n = 17) are categorized as normal. In terms of cognitive decline, 86.7% (n = 26) present a mild deficit and 13.3% (n = 4) are classified as normal. In the dimension of quality of life the average is 71.21 which is classified as optimal. Systematic physical exercise is important in maintaining the parameters of cognitive impairment, depression and self-perceived quality of life regardless of the aging process.
