Abstract

In Chile the increasing prevalence of excess weight and obesity in school age children is associa-ted with multifactorial causes, showing a link with some of the major chronic non transmissible diseases (NCDS ) nowadays. Studies on body mass index (BMI) are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), in order to find out the nutritional status of that segment of people. This aim of the study allows us to describe the reality of the students from a subsidized private school in the commune of Padre las Casas. 203 students, both male and female, were evaluated; the sample included 106 men, 52.2%, and 97 women, 47.8 % aged between 10 and 14 years old. The results showed that obesity and excess weight was 38.6 % for men and 42.2 % for women. These values maintain the trend seen in other studies of school age children in the Araucanía Region.
